Knots By Kris
Since I started my blogging journey, I discovered so many amazing small businesses. This South Florida macrame inspired business, Knots by Kris, instantly caught my eye! The beauty and flawlessness of each and every piece she makes is so incredibly brilliant! Macrame is defined as: The art of knotting cord or string in patterns to make decorative articles. I personally would describe her shop as modern boho chic. She has homemade decorations and beautiful homemade jewelry. Her inventory is so unique and exquisite! (I will take one of each, please and thank you!)

Let’s talk about the Knots By Kris owner and creator, Kristen Smith. She is hardworking and dedicated to her trade. A woman entrepreneur and self taught macrame artist, she’s nothing less than amazing. There is so much love in everything she makes. Although we have not met in person, I can feel her kindness for others and her genuine love for her craft just in simple internet interactions. I’m honored to write this piece for her and look forward to my getting my order in the mail!

Tiffany: What made you decide to start your business?
Kristen: When COVID first hit in March 2020, I was teaching kindergarten from home and felt the need to pick up a new hobby. I have always been crafty, but I did a whole bunch of research and discovered macrame. I decided to give it a try! I fell in love! Long story story, there was (still is) macrame EVERYWHERE!
With all the stress of going back to teaching full time in person, I stopped doing macrame for a bit. I would do a few things here and there. In February 2022, I took a leap of faith and left my teaching position when I was offered a remote position as an Interventional Specialist. It was the best decision I made for myself to still teach, but the best part was getting back into the hobby I fell in love with two years ago.
I started creating different macrame pieces and teaching myself new patterns I never thought I could do. My creativity ran wild, just like it did back in March 2020, but to a whole other extent. In March 2022, I reached out to this wonderful woman who was hosting an International Women’s Day Brunch locally, and asked if I could sell some of my macrame. It was my first event (mind you, I was so nervous that the night before I said I wasn’t going), and it was absolutely amazing. I even sold my first plant hanger to my cat’s veterinarian! Now I can say I’ve done 7 events and plenty more to come, as well as, meeting some life-changing small business owners!

Tiffany: Where do you see your business in 5 years (goals)?
Kristen: I hope to have a mobile/trailer macrame bar where I can host small projects/workshops at events or small businesses (still teaching in a way), while still selling macrame decor and accessories!

Tiffany: Who are you besides a business owner?
Kristen: I am originally from Connecticut, but have been in South Florida for the past 3 years. I am an Intervention Specialist and have been part of the Education World for 8 years. I tutor elementary school-aged kids part-time, as well. I am a cat mom to Milo and Macho, who are both rescue kittens!
Tiffany: What are you most proud of in your life?
Kristen: I am most proud of myself for not giving up, trying things that may be outside my comfort zone beyond my introverted self, and allowing my creative side to become something so wonderful to share with others of my passion for macrame.

Tiffany: Anything else you want to add to your Spotlight blog piece?
Kristen: One thing I would love to share with new small business owners is “go for it and others will see your worth”. It’s scary, but when there’s a will, there’s a way! But when there’s passion, anything is possible!
